4. The Hiker

for David

 I met a hiker once

With sure feet and a steady gait.

And as I watched him climb

With measured steps, he taught me

to be present in this place

Not looking for more, not looking for next

Huddled in the warmth of his woods.

I watched the hiker and came to see

The beauty he found in nature's flaws

Whence I missed when I strode alone.

And through his eyes I saw unveiled

his hidden art

In the gnarled trees, and fallen leaves

Etched in ethereal ice.

As we trod on, the hiker beckoned me

To listen to the fragmented silence.

And so I shut my eyes as hard I could

And through the hiker's ears I heard

the forest songs

In tiny flutters, in whispered mutters

Shrouded in the nothingness.

As time swept by for the hiker and I

The winter of the woods stood still.

And as we held hands the long way home

His gentle patience steered me forth

to lean into his love

Not looking for more, not looking for next

Sheltered from the wayward winds.

And so we hike, and so we roam

Over ridges and valleys, now and anon.

And so we hold, and so we cherish

My beautiful hiker and I.

3. The Lightness that You Bring

 for Patrick

I taste the freedom that you feel

in your long-legged skinny jeans

in your cruising-along dreams

trekking on the seawall

not looking for a port call

boogying to nowhere

trying not to get there

I feel the beauty that you see

when you reach out to the past

when life wasn’t fast

when you’re soaking up a Monet

puzzling on a Dali

when you admire young Keats

and recite old Yeats

I see the pain that you sense

when you see our world at war

when you wonder what for

when the white picket fence

comes at someone’s expense

when you want to console

but you don’t know your role

I sense the lightness that you share

when you palm spin a stop

and make your skateboard pop

when you’re rappin’ a beat

and just dancin’ in the heat

when you throw us your word play

to improve on our work day

I see the warmth that you bring

when we’ve landed in the stress zone

where the path is so windblown

For your special brand of levity

and compassion for humanity

makes us feel like trying again

makes us feel like smiling again

2. High in the Blue

for Emily

It was just yesterday when I saw you so small

toddling about in a little orange frock

with flaxen hair peaking out a small green cap

I saw you slouched upon your two best buds

head down, feet up, content as they come

as they read you a book, as they cuddled you up

I watched you grow, watched innocence fade

watched courage show up on velvety blades

as you danced and floated in sprightly moves

on mountains, on ice, in sequined shoes

And then one day I looked up

And saw a small speck high in the blue

And I knew the yesterdays were gone

the small girl in the orange frock

was now a young woman, proud and true

And as I watched you soar the expanse above

And kiss the ground with leveled wings

I knew tomorrow would be good

that you would steer strong and steady

gently and lovingly

with passion and nurture

Just as you always have.

1. The Red Coat

for Rebecca

You are the red coat

‘side sable and buff coats

the cadmium-orange berry

‘side dull mountain ash cloaks

you are a writer

of songs among sonnets

you are a dreamer

of love among lovers

you are piquant wit

in my weary world

light, winsome dance

in my passive play

you are the sundog

‘side frosted white snowscapes

a far-away beacon

on still, starless seascapes

you are my red coat,

my darling my only

my scarlet, my crimson

my warm coat, my beauty
